BANGALORE: Sania Mirza’s grasscourt aspirations received a severe setback when she lost her opening round women’s doubles match at the Birmingham WTA tournament on Wednesday.

Sania Mirza crashes out at Birmingham

Sania and Yaroslav Shvedova of Kazakhstan fell to Iveta Benesova of the Czech Republic and Russian Alla Kudryavtsova 5-7, 3-6, in 70 minutes in a match in which the Indo-Kazak pairing weren’t quite able to sink their teeth in.Sania, who won the French Open mixed-doubles title with fellow Indian Mahesh Bhupathi last week, and Shvedova were seeded two in the $200,000 event. Americans Liezel Huber and Lisa Raymond were the top-seeds.It was important for Sania to get a run going in Birmingham as it would’ve helped her get into groove for the grasscourt stretch that would include the summer Olympics set to begin in London in late July.Sania and Bhupathi’s win in the French Open strengthened the 25-year-old Hyderabadi’s claim for a wildcard into the singles or women’s doubles events which in turn will help her make the cut for the mixed event.
