Suresh Kalmadi plans to attend London Olympics

PUNE: Pune MP Suresh Kalmadi who was jailed in Tihar jail for nine months in connection with the Commonwealth game scam, plans to attend the London Olympic Games.”Yes I am planning… though nothing is finalized yet. Let’s see how things work out,” said Kalmadi when asked if he would attend Olympics in his capacity as president of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA).Suresh Kalmadi is still IOA president as IOA has not forced him to resign after he promised not to exercise authority. IOA officials had earlier stated that it does not want to create any controversy given that the Olympics are round the corner.However, five months after his release from Tihar jail, MP Suresh Kalmadi on Monday staged a comeback to the political arena and said that he wanted to play a long innings in politics and sports administration.Pune city Congress leaders who are loyal to Kalmadi had planned an inauguration of a sports committee office at the Pune municipal corporation to bring back Kalmadi in the city’s political picture.”I have done a lot for Indian sports. Because of Commonwealth games, infrastructure in Delhi has improved,” said Kalmadi who was flanked by Congress leaders in Pune. Kalmadi was arrested on April 26, 2011 for his alleged role in awarding the contract for installing the Timing-Scoring-Result system at an exorbitant cost of Rs 141 crore, allegedly causing a loss of over Rs 95 crore to the exchequer. Following his arrest, Kalmadi was suspended from the Congress party the same month.”Congress leaders are with me because I have old connections with them. They are present with me in their individual capacity,” said Kalmadi.MLA Ramesh Bagwe, deputy mayor Deepak Mankar, party leader in PMC Arvind Shinde, Maharashtra state Congress women wing president Kamal Vyavahare and other Congress leaders were present on the occasion.
