Unmukt Chand detained for poor attendance

NEW DELHI: India’s Under-19 World Cup winning captain Unmukt Chand has been detained by St. Stephens College for poor attendance. Chand is now fighting a legal battle with the prestigious college, having been denied to appear for his first year BA examinations.

The college demands a minimum of 33.33 percent of annual attendance for students under sports quota. College principal said no relaxation can be made for the 19-year-old, who is impressive in academics as well, scoring 74 per cent marks in 12th standard exams.Valson Thampu, the principal of St Stephens College said, “He could’ve gone to the teachers and spoken to them and asked what did you teach and then have taken his exams on them. If students do that, then I will stand up for them.”Unmukt played a crucial knock of 111 not out in the tense final against Australia last Sunday to lead India Under-19 team to World Cup glory.
