Almost 57% Indians Are Ready To Shift To Electric Vehicles But There's Still A Long Way To Go

Electric vehicles might not be available very readily in India as of now but that certainly does not imply a lack of demand. In fact, the scenario on this side is quite the opposite, as per a recent research report by Ola Mobility Institute, which reveals a figure of more than 50 percent Indians ready to switch to an electric-motor run vehicle.

Titled Ease of Moving Index 2018, the research report accounts for responses from 43,000 individuals spread out across 20 Indian cities namely Delhi, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Jaipur, Kochi, Hyderabad, Surat and Indore.

A surprising figure emerged from the research. 57 percent of the participants are willing to move over IC engine vehicles for a cleaner alternative, i.e. electric cars according to the report.

This marks a huge potential for the automobile companies as well, who have to date mostly been hesitant about investing in an electric fleet for their market base in India. Sure there have been promises of bringing electric variants by 2020 or 2021. Yet the fact of the matter is other countries are already and successfully running on a range of electric vehicles now be it for public transport or carrying goods.

India lags behind in this race, mainly due to lack of infrastructure, both on the side of production of vehicles as well as the charging stations. There is also no set policy in place as yet, to lay down the general guidelines of how an electric vehicle should be and how it should run. Once the crucials are in place, we can expect the EV market in India opening up to many interested parties.
